2009

California Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender
Pride Celebration

Dear Friends,

Congratulations on this year’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Celebration.

I applaud the LGBT community for its long-standing commitment to achieving equality, especially for pursuing marriage equality for all.

In 2008, the California Supreme Court concluded that the concept of “liberty” includes the right to a form the enduring relationship of marriage, and over 18,000 same-sex marriages were performed. Now Proposition 8 has passed, threatening these historic gains. As Attorney General, I have argued that the Supreme Court should strike down Proposition 8 because it unconstitutionally discriminates against same-sex couples and deprives them of the fundamental right to marry.

It is imperative that we join together in our common struggle. The LGBT community has been in the forefront of change. For that you deserve gratitude and continuing support. The work of transformation is arduous but brings with it the joy of great accomplishment. Keep it going!

Sincerely,

s/ Edmund G. Brown Jr.
